Susan McClendon Art Workshop

August 15, 2023 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Susan McClendon (1951–2018) and husband Jim first bought a home on St. George Island in 1998. Like so many, they had fallen in love with the coastal environment, and then with its community life, and then—for Susan—painting. Art became a post-career passion that generated joyous paintings in watercolor, acrylics, and pastels. Besides colorful landscapes and ever-changing seascapes, Susan also captured neighbors at play and work together. Just one example is her vibrant rendering of islanders rebuilding St. George Island’s lighthouse. The group’s marathon scraping of old bricks became a scene both arduous and festive. And Susan was always there.

Also a reader who fed on ideas, conversation, and laughter, Susan was equally committed to the St. George Island Book Club. Its members, along with other friends and admirers, created a memorial fund to celebrate Susan’s imaginative spirit and love of art. The Susan McClendon Art Workshops, like Susan, present a gift to the community she loved. The series of six classes, taught by local artists, is presented by the Book Club in partnership with the Elder Care Community Council (ECCC) of Franklin County. Each one is offered at no charge. Susan’s legacy of friendship and creativity continue.
